Science Experiment #1 Alka Seltzer Fizzle!

We used Alka Seltzer tablets, film canisters and water to see what happens when carbon dioxide becomes trapped. We learned that canisters with lids that close inside the canister pop better than lids that secure on the outside. We also discovered that the more water you put in the canister, the stronger and quicker the reaction. Alka Seltzer contains sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. In powder form these do not react with one another as the particles are held in fixed positions in their respective crystals. When added to water they dissolve and the reaction between the released particles forms carbon dioxide (which is the fizz). IF THIS IS TRIED AT HOME, YOU MUST USE ADULT SUPERVISION.
